Abstract:
In this paper, the author aims to identify and analyze musically so-called “Megalynaria” of the Theotokos Great Feasts (Nativity of the Theotokos, Presentation of the Theotokos, Annunciation and Dormition of the Theotokos) within the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, found in Romanian music collections in monodic versions (psaltic notation). The term “Megalynarion” is used in this paper to mean “Anti-Axion”, that is to say the 9th Ode Heirmos of the Matins Kanon of the Great Feasts which replaces the hymn “Axion Estin” within the Divine Liturgy. There are emphasized Romanian musical variants in psaltic notation in several collections known as “Irmologhion” or “Catavasier”, made by authors such as Filotei sin Agăi Jipei (1713), Macarie the Hieromonk (Viena, 1823), Visarion Protopsaltes (Neamț Monastery, 1826), Anton Pann (București, 1846), Ion Popescu-Pasărea (București, 1908), among which were imposed in the practice those of Macarie the Hieromonk.
